⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tisbury, Wiltshire
Most of Tisbury's interest for visitors lies in and around the High Street, but in Chilmark Road beyond the gatehouse, up the lane a little, is probably the largest, and one of the finest, barns in England, innacurately known as the Tithe Barn (it never was a tithe barn), at the monastic grange of Place Farm. The barn was built in the 14th century, quite possibly even at the end of the 13th century (indicated by tree ring dating), and was likely originally timber framed, now stone. it's Grade I Listed. The cruck beamed thatched roof spans more than 1/3.acre and is currently occupied by the impressive Messums art gallery. The gatehouse, if you are allowed in, leads to Place Farm, originally the monastic grange, it and the gatehouse, like the tithe barn, are both Grade I Listed, these date from the 14th and 15th centuries respectively.
Moving on, Garston Manor II* is at the corner of the High Street and Park Road, it's late 14th century and one of the most interesting houses in the centre. Tisbury benefits from having a mainline railway station offering access to London in less than two hours, as a result the housing stock includes many good quality character houses as well as commercial conversions, for example in Church Street. The former Archibald Beckett brewery, which dates back to 1885, is one such converted building, now offering interesting apartments. Further along the road is the Grade I Church of St John The Baptist, where Thomas Mayhew (1593–1682), who in 1642 established the first English settlement at Martha's Vineyard in North America, was baptised. Opposite is the former Grade II Crown Inn, now also converted to residential.
The best places to eat around Tisbury may actually be in Hindon, The Lamb, and The Grosvenor, or at Fonthill Gifford, The Beckford Arms. In Tisbury village itself is The Bennett Arms, and Beaton Tea Rooms. There is a good range of shops in Tisbury, a doctor's surgery, dentists, and primary school.
