Great Bedwyn, and Crofton, Wiltshire
Great Bedwyn lies 6 miles south-east of Marlborough, close to Savernake Forest, the Kennet and Avon Canal runs through the village. The Crown Estate, on behalf of the monarch, owns much of Bedwyn (The Crown Estate is one of the largest property owners in the UK, managing property worth in excess £14 billion). There is a car park alongside the canal offering easy access to the towpath. The towpath is narrow and may become muddy, so may be inadvisable for wheelchairs or scooters, but by the car park there's plenty of space to just enjoy passing boats. Also the Bruce Boats run from the wharf at Great Bedwyn and they are a charity with accessible canal boats for day or holiday hire for the disabled.
Bedwyn railway station is also adjacent to the canal, it's on the Reading to Taunton line.
The Church of St Mary the Virgin, in Church Street, is Grade I Listed and dates from the 12th century. Near the church, opposite, are attractive Estate houses, dating from 1870. Near the church there's also the rather unusual looking Post Office shop and bakery, and beyond it the attractive schoolrooms. There are quite a few thatched cottages in Great Bedwyn, including The Wharf, 17th century, in Frog Lane, and other interesting buildings definitely include the 1802 Grade I Listed Crofton Pumping Station, 2 miles SW, which is open to the public. The Three Tuns pub is in the High Street.
