Salisbury Cathedral, and Close, Wiltshire
faith and beauty
Salisbury SP1 2EJ
Tallest spire; best kept original copy of the Magna Carta; largest Close; oldest clock; international annual art exhibitions; longest cloister; the largest working font in any cathedral (and capable of full immersion); 800 years old. All true, but its greatest magnificence is in the columns which rise up as if seeking to reach heaven itself, and indeed the most ardent secularist, visiting Salisbury Cathedral just for the history and architecture, must surely doubt the absurdity of their position, as the faith in God through His Son, Jesus Christ, softly resonates around the walls. In his 'Notes from a Small Island' the author Bill Bryson described Salisbury Cathedral as "the single most beautiful structure in England and the Close around it the most beautiful space". Don't miss seeing Salisbury Cathedral as the landscape artist John Constable saw it, including 'Salisbury Cathedral From The Meadows' from the delightful walk through Harnham Water Meadows. Salisbury Cathedral Close
Salisbury Cathedral Close, at more than 80 acres, is the largest cathedral close in Britain. As well as the 800 year old cathedral there are both public and privately owned properties. As at 2020 the record sale price for a private home in the Close is £6.5 million, for Myles Place, back in 2007. Smaller homes date back at least to Elizabethan times.
