Heale Gardens, Wiltshire
Heale House, Middle Woodford, Salisbury SP4 6NT
Heale House is set in eight acres of beautiful gardens beside the river Avon. The house, which is privately owned, is not open to the public, but it's interesting to note that on 6th October 1651 King Charles II, hiding from the Roundheads, spent the night there before fleeing to France. The gardens are the creations of generations of the same family, the Hon. Louis Grenville bought Heale in 1894, and he was the great uncle of the current owner. From early spring when swathes of aconites and snowdrops carpet the ground, to late summer, the garden is in a riot of colour and interest. In one section decorative apple tunnels separate the fruit and vegetable beds that still supply the house, and in another trout filled streams cross under an authentic Japanese tea house and below a red Nikko bridge.
