The Deverills -
the settlements of Longbridge Deverill, Brixton Deverill, Kingston Deverill, and Monkton Deverill

The settlements of Longbridge Deverill, Hill Deverill, Brixton Deverill, Monkton Deverill, and Kingston Deverill form an attractive taper through Wiltshire countryside from the A350 towards Mere. Longbridge Deverillt has a church, St Peter and St Paul parish church, a parish hall, as well as pub, The George Inn, and a petrol station. The settlements, or at least a large part, used to be part of the Longleat Estate, and the Thynnes are often buried in the parish church at Longrbridge Deverill. In 1655 Sir James Thynne, Thynne being the Longleat family name to this day, built almshouses near to the parish church. The George is the only pub in the whole of the Deverills, and the last until beyond Kingston Deverill, when, if you continue along this road, you drop into Mere.
I'm combining the settlements here because they are immediately adjacent and as the village of Longbridge Deverill isn't helped by the fast A350 cutting straight through it its fine architecture is often overlooked in a rush to pass through.
