⭐⭐⭐⭐
Devizes, Wiltshire
Devizes is both beautiful, with more than 300 listed buildings, the colossal Wadworth brewery towering over it, and Caen Locks flowing down from it, and it is also frustrating. It's frustrating because spoiling its full potential are two more of its hugely important buildings, one is Devizes Castle, the other the redundant Devizes Assize Court. The castle sits feeling insecure within the centre of the town with its private owners locking themselves in, not just the town out, and the Devizes Assize Court with its once beautiful, now decidedly tired, columned entrance, which has not served a purpose for more than thirty years, and likely will not for another ten. However there is hope as there is a process grinding slowly on to make the former court the new home for the Wiltshire Museum and a community hub. There may also be some hope regarding the castle as it has just been sold, hopefully the new owners will feel more a part of, and responsible to, the community around which the town grew and served.
